Career
At the 1924 Olympics in Chamonix, he competed in cross-country skiing , biathlon and ski jumping . He won the gold medal in biathlon, surpassing his compatriot Thoralf Strömstad by 0.687 points. He participated in cross-country skiing in both disciplines of the program, racing 18 km and 50 km. He won a gold medal in the 18 km race, winning 1 minute and 20 seconds against Johan Grettumsbroten , who became the second. In the 50 km race he also became the winner, having won against Toralph Strömstad for about 2 minutes. In ski jumping, he became an accomplice in one of the most curious and at the same time dramatic episodes in the history of the Olympic movement. Initially, Haug was declared a bronze medalist, but after 50 years, the Norwegian sports historian Jacob Hage discovered an error in the judicial protocols, as a result of which Haug became the fourth, and Norwegian-American Anders Haugen became the bronze medalist. The bronze medal was awarded to the 86-year-old Haugen, daughter of Haug (since Haug himself was long dead by then) on September 12, 1974 at a specially organized ceremony in Oslo .
At the 1926 World Cup, Haug won silver in biathlon.
From 1919 to 1924, Haug won 9 times at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival, the largest ski competition of the time, 6 times he won in cross-country skiing and 3 times in biathlon.
Memory
In 1946, the sculptor Per Palle Storm erected a monument to Haug in the city of Drammen . In Oslo, there is Houga Street, and in the homeland of a skier, a ski race of his name has been held since 1966.
