History
In the 18th century there was a small wooden chapel in Vileyka, which burnt down in 1810. In 1862 a new wooden chapel was built and at the same time the construction of a stone church began. After the suppression of the Polish uprising of 1863 by the tsarist government, a number of repressive measures were taken against the Catholic Church in the western regions of the empire. The unfinished church building in Vileyka was taken away from the community, handed over to the Orthodox, and after restructuring in the pseudo-Russian style, it was consecrated as the Church of St. George [3] . Catholics continued to pray in the wooden chapel.
In 1906, permission was granted for the construction of a stone church. Construction was completed in 1913, in the same year the church was consecrated in the name of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross . The temple was built of brick, the architecture combines the features of neo-Gothic and neo-manomanic.
In 1915 , John Ventskovich was the head of the church, Michael Glembotsky was the vicar [4] .
During the First World War, the temple suffered from shelling.
In 1922-1928, when Vileyka was part of Poland, it was restored.
After the Second World War, the church was closed and turned into a warehouse. Later, however, it was declared a monument of architecture and an exhibition hall named after Nikodim Silivanovich was placed in it [5] .
In 1990 , transferred to the Catholic community, since that time the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross - the current church.
Architecture
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a three-nave basilica with a developed transept and a pentahedral apse . The dominant architectural composition is a high tower located on the south side of the porch. The ends of the transepts are completed with triangular gables with lancet niches and twin window openings. From the inside, the church is painted under mosaic arabesques [2] .
