Biography
Helvijs Lusis was born on January 14, 1987 in the city of Aizpute , Kurzeme region. From a young age he was fond of sports, was actively involved in athletics, mainly sprinting. In the Latvian Track and Field Athletics Championship in 2008, he won a bronze medal in the 4 x 100 m relay, but he failed to achieve any significant results in the international arena. In 2010, he decided to try his hand at bobsleigh, he was selected to join the national team as an overclocker and began driving to big bobsleigh starts, sometimes showing quite a good time. At the same time he made his debut in the European Cup, at the November stages in the Austrian Igls with his fourth finished first thirteenth and then fourteenth. In April 2011, he participated in the North American Cup, and at the stage in the American Lake Placid with the fourth was located on the sixth line.
A sharp jump in the career of Lusis occurred at the beginning of the 2011/12 season, when he joined the team of pilot Oscar Melbardis . In November, he won the first medal in the European Cup, a bronze with a four-seater crew, while in December he made his debut in the World Cup, and at all subsequent stages always hit the top ten, and even won a bronze medal at the German Winterberg. A real world triumph for him was the youth world championship in Canadian Calgary, when, while in Melbardis' four-seater crew, he won first place and received a gold medal. Also participated in the races of the adult world championship in Lake Placid, but after two attempts, their team was forced to abandon the further struggle for the prize positions.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, Lusis was awarded the right to defend the honor of the country at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , where he subsequently finished fourteenth in the men's four-seater crew program.
