Kio ( 棋王 ио kio:) is one of the seven main male titles (“crowns”) of shogi . The Kio tournament was organized in 1974 ( Kunio Naito defeated then), but he received the title status since 1975 , when the Kyodo Tsushin news agency became its sponsor [1] . And although the 1st season of the title draw took place in 1975, Naito is also officially considered the holder of the 1974 kio title.
The main Kio tournament ( Japanese 棋王 ио kio: sen ) of each season (in which all professionals and amateur meijin take part) takes place at the end of the year, the title contender is determined in January, and the final title match (up to three wins of one of the parties) held in February – March next year. Sometimes this leads to incorrect numbering of title matches: after all, the title of each year is played out next year.
