Biography

Born on October 26, 1914 in the village of Suzhenka, now in the Nikolsky district of Donetsk region of Ukraine, in a peasant family. By nationality, Ukrainian . He graduated from high school, engineering college in the city of Mariupol, Donetsk region.

Drafted into the Red Army in 1938. Member of the Great Patriotic War since June 1941.

The commander of a machine-gun platoon of the 100th Guards Rifle Regiment ( 35th Guards Lozovskaya Red Banner Order of the Suvorov and Bogdan Khmelnytsky Rifle Division , 8th Guards Army , 1st Belorussian Front ) of the Guard Lieutenant Ivan Dorofeev fought with a group of fighters on August 1, 1944 not far from the village of Vulna-Atarnovchia in the area of the city of Magnuszew (Poland). Immediately installed easel and light machine guns.

The Nazis threw hundreds of machine gunners into battle. The paratroopers quickly scattered enemy targets, pressed them to the ground. But the Nazis continued to advance. They went from the flank and created a threat to the environment.

An experienced officer ordered not to shoot and wait for the Germans to go on the attack. He calculated correctly. As soon as the fire began to weaken, the Nazis decided that the machine gunners did not have ammunition or that they had all been killed and rushed forward with a cry. The platoon commander himself lay down behind the machine gun and patiently waited for the enemies to come very close to a clear glade without a single bush. And then he opened fire in long bursts. The Germans did not expect this. By inertia, they were still running straight at our machine guns. However, the chain has noticeably thinned. Some rushed back, but bullets overtook them. Most of the enemy soldiers lay down, but there was nowhere to hide, and the machine gunners easily pulled them out with their bursts. The whole clearing was littered with corpses. In the battle for the village of Volya-Magnushevsk, interacting with rifle companies, he was the first to break into the village. The Germans decided at all costs to dislodge the advance detachment. They threw tanks with assault rifles into battle. Dorofeev’s platoon acted clearly and harmoniously. Without retreating a single step, the soldiers cut off machine gunners from tanks with dense fire. Left without infantry cover, the enemy tanks did not dare to continue the offensive. The attack was repelled. The Nazis lost killed up to 25 people. Our fighters repelled two counterattacks by superior enemy forces.

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for the exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the struggle against Nazi invaders and the courage and heroism shown at the same time, guards Lieutenant Dorofeev Ivan Nikolaevich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Medal The Star ” (No. 6486).
