Building History

Building A of the Taganrog Radio Engineering Institute is the oldest building. This building was built in 1916 according to the project of the architect A. M. Ginzburg for the Alekseevskaya girls' gymnasium [1] . The building was laid on July 10, 1914 [1] . During the construction of the building, a high earthen rampart left over from the former fortifications of the Trinity Fortress had to be torn down. During the excavation work, the builders discovered the remains of ancient powder cellars.

Alekseevskaya girls’ gymnasium did not last long in the building [2] . First, the building was transferred to a military hospital, during the Civil War, it was occupied by one of the departments of the headquarters of the Volunteer Army A. I. Denikin [2] . In Soviet times, the building housed in turn a school, an orphanage, and an agricultural school [2] .

In 1925, on the basis of the Agricultural and Agricultural School (Agronomical), organized in 1920-1921 for homeless teenagers on the Golden Spit in the former Varvatsi estate, the Agricultural College (TSHTP) was established in Taganrog, which is located in the building of the former Alekseevskaya Gymnasium [3] . There was a dormitory in the right wing of the building, and classrooms in the left wing [3] . In 1930, the Agricultural College was reorganized into the Taganrog Institute of Mechanization and Electrification of Agriculture (TIMSH) [4] . TIMSH was abolished in 1952 , at the opening of TRTI [4] .

From 1988 to 2010, classes of the Taganrog Lyceum , created by employees of the Department of Higher Mathematics TRTI , were held in various classroom A buildings [5] .

At the moment, Building A is located in the building of the Engineering and Technology Academy of the Southern Federal University [6] .

Architectural Features

The teacher of the Russian language at the Alekseevskaya girls’ school , the priest of the Mitrofaniev’s church , and then the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, Alexander Balandin described the building’s architectural appearance: “Second girls’ gymnasium: hexo-style - six huge, heavy red brick columns, a high and long cement portal leading to a relatively small vestibule door. The main pediment is a huge triangle of red, not draped brick, as if hastily folded, unstable, ready to collapse, the same two side pediments. All this is in great disproportion with the facade and gloomy. The Venetian windows of the second floor are somewhat enlivened ” [7] .
