History

Initially, the agonofet was the one who arranged the games and awarded prizes, for example, Achilles at the funeral games of Patroclus .

Later it was called the king or another person who opened the funeral games . But if the games were held not by one person, but by the people or several tribes together, then the agonophesia (control of the games) belonged either to the people of the country where the games were held, such as the Corinthians at the Isthmian games , or to representatives of the tribes who participated in the games, such as the Amphyphthys on the Pythian games . The cessation of agonophhesia, in the first case to one person or representative of one tribe in the second, was considered an expression of the dominance of that person or tribe. For example, at the eighth Olympiad, the powerful Argos king Feydon, having appropriated himself the chairmanship of the Olympic Games along with the Pisatids, made himself the representative of the whole Peloponnese , and the Psatids represented exclusively the regions of Elis . Likewise, the power of Philip of Macedon , who presided over the Pythian Games , was recognized by all participants in the Amphicion Union .

Agonofeti were selected from persons known for their knowledge of the business and incorruptible impartiality, taking into account their origin:

  • at the Olympic Games , in the era of their prosperity, the Aegeans were agonophetes,
  • on the Pythian - amfiktion ,
  • on the Nemean - together the Corinthians , Argivians and Cleonians,
  • in Isthmian - the Corinthians.

The agonophetes were engaged not only in the distribution of awards, but also made sure that the games were held in a strictly established and accepted order, and even punished violators of the order.

Agonofeti were the first to appear in the arena: richly dressed, in an ornate chariot , holding an ivory rod in their hands as a symbol of power. They were given the best places; only at games in the year of Bacchus did they yield to their archons .
