The single was praised by critics. About.com made its own rating of “The Best Songs of Foreigner and Lou Graham”, placing “That Was Yesterday” in sixth place, and noted that the composition was remembered due to the interesting sound of the keyboards and the good lyrics of the song itself. About.com Steve Peak called the song “a full hit” and the best moment on the album Foreigner [1] .
Brat Adams from Allmusic called the song “amazing”, praising the group for the elegant sound of the synthesizer in the song, and he praised the chorus of the song [2] .
Despite the positive reviews from critics, the single could not repeat the success of its predecessor “ I Want to Know What Love Is ”, but it rotated well on the charts, it took the highest position in the American Billboard Hot 100 (No. 12). The composers of the song were Lou Gramm and Mick Jones , produced by guitarist Mick Jones and Alex Sadkin . On the B side of the single is the song “Two Different Worlds”.
