Geography

The village is located in the southern part of the Irafsky district , on the left bank of the Aigamuga river. It is located 35 km south of the regional center - Chikola and 102 km south-west of the city of Vladikavkaz .

History

It is difficult to establish the exact date of the formation of the Makhchesk village, however, many historical notes indicate that the village has long been the center of the Tapan-Digor Society [2] .

According to legend, the famous founder of the powerful feudal clan Badelyat once settled here - a certain Badel. Initially, he came to Mahschek in search of work. By giving just at that time, the elders of the village, headed by a certain Ayduruk, were looking for someone who could become a sentinel and notify them in case of danger. The choice fell on the young and strong Badel. In payment, he demanded "churek from the hearth." At first, Badel didn’t even have a voice on the Nykhas council, but over time he not only gained recognition from the people with his sons, but also became its leader after Aydoruk [3] . The name of one of his sons, Abisal, who gave the name of one of the branches of the Badelyat clan, is associated with many architectural sights of the village of Makhchesk, and the name of the Abisalovs is still widespread among Ossetians.

The well-preserved crypt complex , which is one of the largest crypt complexes of Digoria, testifies to the fact that the village of Makhchesk was once rich and large [4] .
