Chunlan Cup

The Chunlan Cup is the only international go title tournament held according to the Chinese rules of the game ^[2] . The tournament is sponsored by the Chunlan Group ; the prize pool is 1,000,000 yuan ^[1] . Competitions are held every 2 years. 24 players are invited to participate in the tournament according to the following principle:

• 3 players who took 1st place in the previous cup draw,
• 8 players from   China
• 5 from   Japan
• 4 from   South Korea
• 2   Chinese Taipei ,
• 1 from North America ,
• 1 from Europe .

Competitions are held according to the Olympic system . Time control is 3 hours of main time and five periods by beating for 60 seconds ^[2] .

In 2001, during the 3rd Cup draw, an incident occurred when Satoru Kobayashi (Japanese professional, 9th dan ) accidentally wounded his rival Ryu Sikun : when they were relaxing in a bar, Kobayashi held a glass in his hand, and waving it, accidentally broke it, injuring Ryu Sikun's cheek and his hand ^[2] . As a result, the Nihon Kiin organization suspended him for a year from all professional tournaments, but later the period of disqualification was reduced to 8 months, as other players, including Korean and Chinese, left their signatures in his defense ^[3] .
