Oi (shogi)

Oi ( jap. 王位 o: i , "shogi crown") is one of the seven major men's titles ("crowns") of shogi . Established in 1960 by the newspaper Sankey Shimbun and the Union of Three Companies [1] .

The main Oi tournament ( Jap. 王位 戦 o: i-sen ) of each season takes place in the spring. Only professional shogists and female title holder can participate in it. The 12 shogists who passed the qualifying stage are divided into 2 groups (white and red), and a round-robin match is played in each group. An applicant for the title is determined in June, in the game between the group winners. A similar system works in the women's title tournament Juru Oi .

The final title match (up to four victories of one of the parties) is held in July and September.
