Biography
Member of the Great Patriotic War. Had combat awards.
From 1956 to 1964 he was a teacher, from 1965 to 1981 he worked as the head of the department of physical geography of the Penza State Pedagogical Institute . Under his leadership, the postgraduate department was opened at the department. The main research area of the department at that time was the study of climate.
In 1965 he defended his doctoral thesis on the topic "The origin of precipitation on the European territory of the USSR in the warm season", and in 1966 became a professor of the PSPI.
Long-term chairman of the Penza branch of the Geographical Society of the USSR.
Scientific Activities
He made a significant contribution to the study of nature, population and economy of the Penza region. The works of Professor S.I. Zhakov on the climatology of the USSR and the Penza region are widely known. Under his leadership, prepared the first geographical atlas of the Penza region (1982).
S. I. Zhakov is the author of over 60 scientific papers, including monographs:
- "The influence of the Arctic on the climate of the USSR" (1969),
- "The main climatic patterns in the territory of the USSR" (1978),
- "General climatic features of the Earth" (1984).
