Infant mortality (the number of children who die before the age of 1 year) in Russia fell in the 1960s, increased in 1972-1976, and decreased from 1985 to 1990.
In 1991-1993, infant mortality increased, reaching 19.9 per thousand in 1993, after which it began to fall slowly, amounting to 16.9 per thousand in 1999. [one]
In 2011, infant mortality was 7.3 ppm, the highest infant mortality observed in the North Caucasus Federal District (12.9 ppm), the lowest in the North-West (5.4 ppm) [2] . In connection with a change in the calculation methodology in 2012, infant mortality increased [3] . The lowest infant mortality index in Russia over the past decade was in Chuvashia and amounted to 3.3 ppm in 2015 [4] .
According to the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Veronika Skvortsova , the mortality rate among infants in Russia in 2014 amounted to 7.4 per thousand births versus 8.2 in 2013.
According to the results of 2015, the infant mortality rate decreased to 6.5 [5] .
In January-July 2016, the infant death rate fell to a historic low of 6.0 per 1,000 births [6] .
In 2017, infant mortality in the country decreased again, reaching a record low of 5.5 per 1 thousand. [7]
