Chlamydomonas cell pyrenoid
Pyrenoid is a special inclusion (differentiated region) inside the chloroplast . They are found in some groups of eukaryotic algae and in anthocerotic mosses . Functionally represents the storage site of the enzyme ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (rubisco) and / or the sugar synthesis center using this enzyme. Around the pyrenoid in green algae, spare products ( starch ) are deposited.
Characteristics of pyrenoids (their presence, location, shape, number) serve as important diagnostic features for algal taxonomy .
