Biography
Born on October 8, 1900 in the village of Ichma (now Stefan-Karadzhovo), Bulgaria, the fifth child and fourth son in the family of the local priest Anton Tsonev. On the maternal side is connected with the clan governor Stefan Karadzha .
He received his primary education in his native village. In the fall of 1915 he entered the Plovdiv Theological Seminary , which he graduated in 1921. From the summer of that year he served as an housekeeper in Batkun Monastery , and from September 1921 until October 15, 1923 - as a teacher-educator in the Cherepish Priest School.
From the end of 1923 until 1927 he studied at the newly opened Theological Faculty of St. Clement of Ohrid, Sofia University .
On May 11, 1924, in the second semester of training, he received monastic tonsure with the name Simeon from the rector of the seminary, Bishop Michael of Velich, in the seminary church of St. John of Rylsky. He was under the spiritual senility of Professor Dr. Archimandrite Euthymius (Sapundzhiev). On July 24 of the same year, he was ordained hierodeacon by Bishop Michael Velichsky.
From the fall of 1927 until the summer of 1929, he completed a theological specialization at the Old Catholic Theological Department of the University of Bern , Switzerland, as a scholarship holder of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs .
After returning to Bulgaria, he again taught at the Cherepish Priest School until the end of the 1929-1930 school year.
From the summer of 1930 to the end of 1940 he served four months as a diocesan preacher and ten years as a protosingel in the Dorostol metropolis.
On December 25, 1931, he was ordained to the rank of Hieromonk Metropolitan Mikhail Dorostolsky in the Ruse Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.
December 25, 1933, by decision of the Holy Synod, was elevated to the rank of archimandrite .
From January 16, 1941 to January 31, 1947 he was the rector of the Pastoral and Theological Institute in the Cherepish Monastery .
From February 1, 1947 to April 15, 1949, he was the chief secretary of the Holy Synod , after which he consistently served as synodal delegate at the Bachkovo Monastery and the head of the Department for Spiritual Oversight of Stavropegic Monasteries at the Holy Synod.
From August 5, 1951 to July 15, 1955, hegumen of the Bachkovo Monastery.
On December 27, 1953, in the Patriarchal Cathedral Church-Monument of St. Alexander Nevsky, he was consecrated bishop with the title Traianopolsky , becoming the first clergyman to be ordained bishop after the restoration of the patriarchate in the Bulgarian Church on May 10, 1953.
Since July 15, 1955 he was the editor-in-chief of the journal “Dukhovna Kultura”, and at the same time was a bishop in the location of the Holy Synod.
From September 1, 1960 to May 1961 - Vicar of the Dorostol Metropolitan.
From May 1961 until his death, he was again bishop at the location of the Holy Synod.
He died on May 24, 1971 in Sofia. Buried in the Sofia Central Cemetery.
