Offshore programming in Russia

At the moment, we can speak of the market for offshore programming in Russia as established. Since 2000, there has been a process of market consolidation, enlargement of major players, and the emergence of flagships of the Russian IT industry; software companies are gaining technological expertise and experience in managing complex projects.

More than 250 global companies are actively using outsourcing software developed in Russia, including Ericsson , Siemens , Nortel , Motorola . Despite the outflow of specialists in the late 1980s - early 1990s , about 250,000 people are employed in the IT sector in Russia, of which about 10% are directly related to the export of software development services (according to the White Paper Spot Light study : “ IT Outsourcing Destination: Russia (English) ).

Russian software developers have several advantages over competitors from Asia and Oceania :

  • Russia is geographically closer to Europe and America
  • Russia is closer to Europe and America culturally
  • Russian software developers are more qualified in connection with a higher level and quality of education received (higher quality of teaching basic sciences, heritage of the scientific school of the USSR ).

The disadvantages of Russian software developers compared to the same competitors:

  • Worst knowledge of English
  • Higher wage requirements
  • Fears of potential Western customers in relation to the Russian market style: less transparency, sale of developed software in parallel to a third company, etc.
