Four infantry battalions of the Vyshkuv operational group under the command of Major Kazimir Mazur took battle against units of the 3rd Wehrmacht army. The first German attack was organized on September 6, but was repelled by Polish forces. The second attack took place on September 7, as a result of which the Germans took a small fortified area on the Narev River, but the Poles ousted the Germans from there. Soon the Poles received an order to retreat and surrendered Pultusk without a fight.
