History
The city was founded, it is believed, around 1500 BC. e. Initially, it was located on the banks of the Jamna River, which now flows 14 km east. Mentioned in the ancient Indian epic “ Mahabharata ” as Shonaprastha [2] .
Geography
The city is located in the eastern part of Haryana, west of the Jamna River, at an altitude of 219 meters above sea level [3] . Sonipat is located approximately 190 kilometers south of Chandigarh , the state’s administrative center, and 20 kilometers north of New Delhi , the country's capital.
Demographics
According to the 2011 official census , the population was 292,339 people, of which 53.4% were men and 46.6% were women. The literacy rate of the population was 77.4% [4] .

Economics and Transport
Sonipat is one of the largest bicycle manufacturing centers in India [2] . Also, the city produces sewing machines , car spare parts, rolled steel, and textile products . Agriculture is developed. The main crops cultivated in the vicinity of the city are wheat , rice , sugarcane , cotton , barley , jute , millet , sesame , corn , sorghum , peanuts , tobacco , etc. Sonipata communicates with other cities by rail and road . The nearest civilian airport is located in Delhi [3] .
