History

The city was founded, it is believed, around 1500 BC. e. Initially, it was located on the banks of the Jamna River, which now flows 14 km east. Mentioned in the ancient Indian epic “ Mahabharata ” as Shonaprastha [2] .

Geography

The city is located in the eastern part of Haryana, west of the Jamna River, at an altitude of 219 meters above sea ​​level [3] . Sonipat is located approximately 190 kilometers south of Chandigarh , the state’s administrative center, and 20 kilometers north of New Delhi , the country's capital.
