History

The Apostolic Nunciature in Switzerland, as a permanent nunciature, was established in 1543 , in line with the reforms of the diplomatic service of the Holy See and the establishment of a permanent nunciature, although there was a papal representative in Switzerland before this period. However, the first resident apostolic nuncio was appointed only in 1579 .

The Apostolic Nunciature has a dual role. On the one hand, it provides a link between Rome and the Church of Switzerland, in particular, with the conference of Swiss bishops. Thus, the nuncio prepares the appointment of bishops in Switzerland. On the other hand, as the embassy of the Holy See, the apostolic nunciature provides for diplomatic relations with the Swiss civil authorities.

Since 1987 , with the establishment of the apostolic nunciature in Liechtenstein , the apostolic nuncio in Switzerland became the apostolic nuncio in Liechtenstein , in combination.
