Secrets of an old hotel

Claire ( Sarah Paxton ) and Luke (Pat Healy) are the last two employees to serve the once-prestigious Yankee Pedlar Inn the last weekend before it closes. Claire is suffering from severe asthma and recently dropped out of college; Luke is working on a website chronicle of alleged ghost appearances at the hotel. Both of them are ghost hunt enthusiasts, the hotel’s mysterious history impresses them, and the main part in this story is the legend of Madeline O'Malley, who hanged herself in the 1800s after her husband left her during the honeymoon . Madeline's body was allegedly hidden in the basement by the hotel owners.

Luke lodges an elderly woman in the hotel, in which Claire recognizes Lynn Reese-Jones ( Kelly McGillis ), a former actress who arrived in the city at a certain congress. Claire brings towels to the actress's room, she is awestruck by a celebrity, and there is an awkward clash between her and Lynn, who is behaving rather unfriendly. The next night, Claire hears a noise coming from the hotel garage, where there is a door leading to the basement. She locks the garage door and returns to the building. Using the equipment for the “ghost hunt” owned by Luke, she records quiet voices and music in different parts of the hotel (see the phenomenon of electronic voice ), and in addition, she sees the piano in the hall, sounding by itself.

In the corridor, she stumbles upon Lynn, who admits that she came to the congress of mediums and that she interrupted her acting career to become a medium. She also forbids Claire from going down to the basement. In the early morning, Claire wakes up a vision of Madeline in her room. Later that day, an old man arrives and asks for a room on the third floor. Luke explains that due to the impending closure of the hotel, all the furniture has been removed from the third floor rooms, but Claire offers the newcomer bedding, as the beds are still in the rooms, and accompanies him to the bridal room in which he wishes to stay.

Luke and Claire decide to examine the basement. There they hear voices and encounter other paranormal phenomena. Frightened, Luke leaves the hotel. Claire, in a panic, wakes Lynn and asks her for help. Lynn goes down the basement stairs, where she makes contact with the spirit, and then orders Claire to immediately leave the hotel. Claire rushes upstairs to the second guest’s room, but finds a suicide note, his body in the bathroom, with cuts on his wrists, and sees Madeline hanging in a loop. Horrified, she runs down the stairs and discovers that Luke has returned to the hotel. He goes upstairs in search of Lynn, and Claire again hears a noise from the basement. She approaches the stairs, where she is scared by the ghost of an old man. She falls from the stairs, banging her head.

Having lost orientation after the blow, Claire finds herself in the room where Madeline's body was, and the old man follows her. She tries to open the door to the garage, forgetting that she locked it herself. Faced with the ghost of Madeline, Claire dies from an asthma attack. The next morning, Luke tells the police that he heard Claire screaming from the basement, but could not open the door to help her. Luke and Lynn leave with the police. Lynn tells Luke that Claire could no longer be saved.
