XVIII century

In 1797, the priest Augustin de Baruel published a book, Notes on the History of Jacobinism ( fr. Mémoires pour servir à l'Histoire du Jacobinisme ), describing a global conspiracy involving many secret groups, whose activities were allegedly coordinated by the Illuminati, and the Great French revolution . The further goal of the “Illuminati” de Baruel was to destroy Christianity , the state and society as such. Among the groups involved in the conspiracy were the Rosicrucians , the Templars, and the Jacobins . De Baruel has described Weishaupt as the “vile whim of nature” and put all the responsibility for the activities of the secret societies on him.

Almost simultaneously, but independently of de Baruel, former Scottish freemason and professor of natural philosophy at Edinburgh University, John Robison begins to publish the book "Evidence of a conspiracy against all religions and governments of Europe" ( Eng. Proofs of a Conspiracy Against all Religions and the Council of Europe ). After reading the work of de Baruel, he begins to quote it in his treatise. Robison argued the existence of a conspiracy aimed at replacing all religions with humanism and building a new world order .

XX century

The famous American historian James Billington, in his book Fire in the Minds of Men , suggests that the activities of the Bavarian Illuminati indirectly influenced the formation and development of revolutionary sentiments in 19th century Europe [1] .

XXI century

Related to the activities of the supposedly resurrected Order of the Illuminati are the storyline of the adventure novel by Dan Brown “ Angels and Demons ” and the film of the same name made on it. According to the plot, the followers of the order are trying to thwart the election with a conclave of the new Roman pope , although in reality there is only a dramatization of the Illuminati conspiracy, as a result of which the main antagonist hopes to occupy the Vatican throne.

US Founders

There is also a version not confirmed by any historical documents that many of the founding fathers of the United States , being freemasons, were also Illuminati. On the reverse side of the state seal of the USA there is an image of an unfinished pyramid with the " All-seeing eye ", symbol of the Illuminati [2] , above it. The pyramid is surrounded by lat. Annuit Coeptis (“he contributed to our beginnings”, or “start time”) and Novus ordo seclorum (“new order of the ages”). The date underlying the pyramid on the Great Seal of the United States is written in Roman numerals MDCCLXXVI - 1776, which corresponds to the year the United States adopted the Declaration of Independence. A similar image is on the one-dollar bill. According to the version of the conspiracy theorists, in fact in both cases they perpetuated the founding date of the “Society of Bavarian Illuminati” (May 1, 1776).

The public statements of the third US President Thomas Jefferson , in which he spoke with sympathy about the founder of the Illuminati Order Adam Weishaupt , also added fuel to the fire, initiating a mass "conspiracy of hysteria" [3] .
