Biography

Nikolay Artleben was born on March 13, 1827 in the city of Vladimir [2] . He came from a noble family (according to other sources - the son of a priest). [1] [3] In 1849 he graduated from the Moscow Palace Architectural School with the title of senior architectural assistant. Since 1851, he worked in Vladimir , first as an architect of the Vladimir Treasury Chamber, since 1856 - as a diocesan Vladimir architect. In 1857 he was appointed to the academicians. From 1866 until his death, he served in the Construction Department of the Vladimir Provincial Government. Since 1867 he was an active member of the Imperial Moscow Archaeological Society , was a member of the Moscow Architectural Society and the Russian Archaeological Society. In 1879, he was approved by the secretary of the Vladimir Provincial Statistical Committee and the editor of the unofficial part of the Vladimir Provincial Gazette. [1] [4] [2]

N. A. Artleben was actively engaged in the study of Vladimir- Suzdal architecture, the first to scientifically substantiate its originality. He was engaged in the study of architecture and history of the Vladimir region of the XV — XVII centuries, restored ancient structures. In 1858, he inspected the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl . In 1859 he completed the project of restoration of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Vladimir (1190-92). In the same year, together with D. Koritsky carried out the restoration of the Theotokos-Nativity Monastery . The pre-Mongol time monument was demolished and rebuilt, that is, essentially lost. In 1873, on the instructions of the Provincial Construction Committee, he drafted a restoration project for the Golden Gate .

As a member of the Moscow Archaeological Society, he participated in numerous restorations and inspections of monuments. In 1876, he inspected the Smolensk Kremlin , in 1871-1875, the restoration of the Right and Book-Keeping Chambers of the Moscow Printing Yard [5] [1] [4] (15 Nikolskaya Street , in the yard), which was recognized as exemplary by contemporaries. In 1877, he inspected and participated in the Commission, which considered projects of alterations in the Intercession Cathedral [2] . [one]

He completed the restoration of the Assumption Cathedral in Vladimir and published a separate monograph on this subject, for which he was awarded a large gold medal from the Society of Lovers of Natural History, Anthropology and Ethnography at the Polytechnic Exhibition in 1872 [2] . [1] .

The work of N. A. Artleben “Antiquities of the Suzdal-Vladimir Region preserved in architectural monuments within the Vladimir province” was awarded in 1881 a large silver medal of the Russian Archaeological Society [2] .
