Biography
Simon Gumeniuk was born on July 16, 1914 in the village of Sloboda-Dashkovetskaya (now - Vinnitsa district of Vinnitsa region of Ukraine ) in a peasant family. After elementary school, he worked on a collective farm . In 1936, Gumeniuk was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1939, he graduated from junior lieutenant courses. Since September 1941 - on the fronts of World War II. Participated in the Kharkov operation of 1942 , the Battle of Stalingrad , the liberation of Donbass and Melitopol . By March 1944, Senior Lieutenant Semyon Gumeniuk commanded a company of the 144th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 49th Guards Rifle Division of the 28th Army of the 3rd Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Kherson region of the Ukrainian SSR [1] .
On the night of March 11 to 12, Gumenyuk’s company crossed the Dnieper in the Sadovoye village of the Belozersky district and captured a bridgehead on its western shore. On the morning of March 12, Gumeniuk personally led his fighters to attack a fortified enemy point. Bursting into the trenches of the enemy, the company destroyed 2 machine guns , a bunker and about 20 soldiers and officers of the enemy. Coming further, the company took possession of an important frontier. On March 13, a company liberated the village of Kiselevka, destroying 3 tanks and a large number of enemy soldiers and officers. In that battle, Gumenyuk personally destroyed about 10 soldiers and officers. March 17, 1944 he died in battle on the outskirts of Nikolaev . He was buried in the village of Ukrainka, Zhovtnevy district of the Nikolaev region [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 3, 1944, for "exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and shown courage and heroism" of the guard, senior lieutenant Semyon Gumenyuk was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin . Forever enrolled in the lists of personnel of the military unit [1] .
Busts of Gumeniuk were installed in the villages of Ukrainka and Sloboda-Dashkovetskaya [1] .
