Biography
Ernst Christian Julius Schering was born in the family of a forester. From 1850, he studied civil engineering in the city of Hanover, and from 1852 - higher mathematics and physics at the University of Gottingen . Here he listened to the lectures of Gauss, Moritz Stern, P. Lejeune-Dirichlet , G. Riemann , V. Weber .
In 1857 he received his Ph.D., defended his thesis on the mathematical theory of electrical currents and, in addition, was awarded prizes for his writings: “ Zur ma thematischen Theorie elektrischer Ströme. Beweis der allgemeinen Lehrsä tze der Elektrodynamik, bes. der Inductionslehre aus d. elektr. Grundgesetze "(1857; also Poggendorff's" Annalen der Physik und Chemie ", 1857) and" Ueber die conforme Abbildung des E lipsoï ds auf der Ebene "(1858).
He underwent the process of habilitation in 1858. From 1860 he occupied the professorship of the University of Göttingen, from 1868 after the suicide of V. Klinkerfus he was appointed director of the Göttingen geomagnetic observatory, which was headed by Gauss before him.
In 1884–1886 he headed the department of astronomy at the university.
In 1889 he became a secret adviser .
Since 1862 - member of the Academy of Sciences in Gottingen . In 1887/1888 and 1890/1891 he headed the Academy.
Since 1875 - Corresponding Member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences .
From 1863 he participated as an editor in the implementation of the publication of the complete works of K. F. Gauss , undertaken by the Göttingen Society of Sciences.
His brother Carl Julius Edward Schering (1854–1925) was a professor of mathematics in Strasbourg, and then a professor of physics in Darmstadt.
Son Harald was a professor of electrical engineering in Hanover.
