He worked at the Museum of Tokyo University . As an employee of the university, Professor Abe also served as an inspector at the Tokyo Fish Wholesale Market, whose function was to control the lots prepared for the auction (batches of goods) in order to prevent the sale of poisonous or suspicious fish in this regard.
He became famous for his taxonomic studies of the fish- breeding fish (Tetraodontidae, Teleostei ) family of East Asia, in particular, the family of poisonous fish Takifugu, better known under the Japanese name fugue ( Jap. 河豚 or 鰒), which he described in 1949 [2] .
In addition, he described such species of fish as: Centroscyllium kamoharai , Fugu obscurus , etc.
Some species of fish are named after him, in particular: Tetraodon abei , Sagamichthys abei and Chaunax abei .
He died in a Tokyo hospital from a brain hemorrhage in 1996.
