Views

In the early 1990s, he adhered to liberal views, actively advocated for "reforms", including the power structures of the USSR. According to the recollections of the chief of foreign intelligence of the USSR Leonid Shebarshin , in 1991 he supported the US line for the collapse of the USSR:

Baker very diplomatically and firmly explained that Russia should not be allowed to claim an excessive share in the division of the inheritance of the former USSR. Mr. Bakatin diplomatically but enthusiastically accepted this thesis. Mr. Bakatin’s assistant Mr. Nikonov, sitting at the same table, smiled approvingly: Russia should part with great-power ambitions once and for all. [19]

On April 7, 2014, the day before the State Duma’s Education Committee held a “round table” on the topic: “Russian Historical Tradition: the content of history textbooks,” Vyacheslav Nikonov’s view on Russian history was published on the website of the state institution:

The attitude of an entire generation of young people to the history of their country depends on what will be written in the textbooks, and how convincingly and fascinatingly it will be written. It is always necessary to remember in which country you live and work, to know its traditions. Our Fatherland has a great past. A branch of the Aryan tribe descended from the Carpathian mountains , peacefully settled the Great Russian Plain, Siberia , the coldest part of the planet, reached the Pacific Ocean , founded Fort Ross , absorbed the juices of the richest cultures of Byzantium , Europe, Asia, defeated the most terrible enemy of mankind - Nazism , laid the road to space . But in few places they know so little and value their past and present [20] .

The poet Igor Irtenyev ironically remarked: “I don’t understand, Nikonov, whose grandson is Molotov or Ribbentrop after all?” [21] .

Archaeologist Lev Klein criticized Nikonov’s statement:

Here the Slavs are called Arias according to the fashionable nowadays of the adherents of the so-called “ folk-history ” - amateurish and absolutely anti-scientific works on history, especially on ethnogenesis. Works of this kind, free from any methodology and appealing to the lowest chauvinistic instincts of the masses, have flooded the sector of supposedly popular science literature in bookstores and Internet forums ... The racial question is a completely different sphere, there is no Aryan race, and to name Slavs, Chechens or Türkic arias can only purely amateurs. It is strange to encourage this practice from the high cabinet of the State Duma, and even from the Education Committee. ... I have to argue with the poet Irtenyev. Nikonov can in no way be the grandson of Ribbentrop, in no sense. And the point is not that his grandmother (Molotov’s wife Polina Zhemchuzhina-Karpovskaya) was Jewish. The fact is that the Slavs, according to the theory that the party of Ribbentrop preached, did not enter the Nordic branch of the peoples, which the Nazis and their predecessors called the Aryan. And they were called by misunderstanding ... So, Gypsies, Tajiks and Ossetians - there are no more Aryans in our territory, represented by significant groups of the population ... Well, this is a forgivable mistake, although the chairman of the Education Committee could consult his experts [22] .
