Biography
The son of a pediatrician. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University ( 1949 ), taught at the schools of Frunze and Sverdlovsk . PhD in Philosophy. He worked at the Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts in Moscow ( 1959 - 1968 ), at the Institute of the Art Industry (1968 - 1974 ), and published over 40 scientific papers.
Since the early 1960s - an active participant in the human rights movement, his articles were distributed in samizdat . He supported J. Daniel , G. Superfin , A. D. Sakharov , A. I. Solzhenitsyn . In 1968 he was expelled from the CPSU (joined in 1956) and was fired from his job without the right to work in scientific institutions. In 1974, he emigrated to the United States with his wife Natalya Sadomskaya . He collaborated with Radio Liberty , taught at Amherst College , Boston College , Harvard and Columbia Universities. Since 1969, published abroad in the USSR in Russian and English, sometimes under pseudonyms (Lev Zentsov, Yar Yasny, B. Sugrobov and others), he criticized nationalist tendencies in the USSR and in emigration circles.
Died of lung cancer. The obituary of Shragin was written by Sergei Dovlatov , who was friends with him: this article was the last work of Dovlatov, who died 9 days after Shragin, and was published next to his own obituary.
