Biography
Mael Duin was the son of Aed Allan . His father ruled the North Irish kingdom of Ailech , and from 734 until his death also held the title of the supreme king of Ireland . Aed Allan died in 743. After his death, the throne of Ailech passed on to his brother Niall Frossach , who, from 763, was also the supreme king. He abdicated the throne in 770 or 778, and this allowed Mael Duin himself to become the ruler of Ailech. At the same time, the title of supreme king of Ireland was transferred to King Mida Donnhad Midi from the Klann Holmain of the Klan Holmain competed with Kenel Eogain [2] .
Very little is known about the activity of Mael Duin poppy Aedo Alline as ruler of Ailech. The main event of his reign was the war in 787 with King Kenel Konail Domnall poppy Aeda Muindairgom , who bore the title of "King of the North." This title was given to the most powerful rulers of that part of Ireland , which was ruled by the representatives of the northern branches of the Wee Neill dynasty [3] . Annals It is reported that Mael Duin defeated Domnall in a battle, and he had to flee the battlefield. Thanks to this victory, the title “King of the North” passed to the ruler Ailech [4] [5] [6] .
However, after this, Mael Duin Mac Aedo Alline ruled very briefly: in 788 he died and his cousin Aed Dedicate became the new king of Ailech [5] . Mael Duyne had three sons, Tigernakh, Murghad and Flann. Of these, Murhad later also was the ruler of Ailech [2] .
