Description
The largest peninsula of Albania , located in the southwestern part of the country. Length - 16 kilometers, width - 3-4.5 kilometers, area - 62 square kilometers. Administratively, it belongs to the Vlora district, washed by the waters of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas ( Otranto Strait), which at this point are part of the Karaburun-Sazan National Marine Park [3] . Five kilometers north of the peninsula is the largest island of the state - Sazani , the westernmost point of Albania, while the Karaburun peninsula itself is the westernmost point of continental Albania.
The highest point of the peninsula is Mount Koreta (826 m), on which a telecommunication antenna was installed in the early 2000s .
It is known that the peninsula was visited by such prominent historical figures as Marc Anthony and Manuel II Paleolog on the way to Venice . In clear weather, the Italian peninsula of Salentina and the city of Otranto can be seen with naked eyes from the peaks of Karaburun.
There are no sources of drinking water on the peninsula. From the fauna, one can distinguish logheads living here who lay eggs on local desert shores, and white-bellied seals [4] [5] - both of these animals are in danger of extinction. The flora is sparse, from the trees oaks and pines prevail.
Since 2008 (together with Italy), the project of building a complex of wind power stations on the peninsula [6] [7] , one of the largest in Europe, has been implemented, which provoked protests from the Albanian opposition [8] .
The coast of the peninsula was dangerous for sailors. The ancient Roman poet Horace wrote [9] :
Is he afraid of death
Who is floating scum, without flinching his eyes, matured,
Belly swollen sea waves,
Rocks underwater thunderstorm - Acrokeravnia?Original text (lat.)Quem Mortis timuit gradum
