The 1909 mutiny
In 1909, Konstantinos Alfonsatos-Tipaldos , with the rank of captain-lieutenant, joined the “Military Council” of officers led by Colonel N. Zorbas, who forced the royal court and politicians to carry out reforms in the army and in the country. After the “Council” became almost a government body and the senior officers of the fleet began to adjoin it, Tipaldos’s ambitions led him to clash with the “Council”.
On October 16, at the head of 25 junior officers, Tipaldos captured 5 destroyers located there at the base of the Navy on the island of Salamis ( Sfendoni , Navkratusa, Aspis, Tiella , Velos). Loyal to the government, a group of armadillos opposed the rebels. Tipaldos, aboard the destroyer Sfendoni, commanded by Ioannis Demethihas , leading a group of 3 destroyers, took the battle with 3 battleships in the Strait of Salamis. The artillery duel lasted 15 minutes. As a result of a direct hit, Sfendoni got a roll and, in order to avoid drowning, Tipaldos ordered the destroyer to be stranded. “Navkratusa”, “Aspis” and “ Hydra (battleship) ” received more light injuries. 5 sailors from the rebel destroyers were killed. It became apparent that the rebellion had no prospects. Tipaldos and 7 of his associates went into the mountains, but were captured and tried [2] [3]
Balkan Wars
The destroyer took part in the Balkan wars of 1912-1913.
On December 3 (16), 1912, Navkratusa, as part of the Greek fleet, led by the flagship armored cruiser Averof , under the command of Admiral Kunturiiotis, took part in the Greek victory over the Turkish fleet at Elli .
On January 5 (18), 1913, Navkratusa, along with 4 Greek armadillos and 8 destroyers, took part in the subsequent Greek victory over the Turkish fleet at Lemnos, after which the Turkish fleet no longer dared to leave the straits [4] [5] .
World War I
In October 1916, the ship was confiscated by the Entente , due to the initial neutrality of Greece and was transferred to the French. Under the French flag, the destroyer was used for anti-submarine patrols between Algeria and Toulon . After Greece officially entered the war in July 1917, the ship was returned to the Greek fleet in 1918.
Subsequent years
After the surrender of the Ottoman Empire, the ship from 1919 supported the Greek army during its Asia Minor campaign. In March 1921, "Navkratusa" flew onto the rocks of Paximadi southwest of the island of Milos and sank [6] .
