History

The first information about the Serbs living in Vienna dates back to 1670 [2] . However, a diocese with a center in Vienna appeared only in the 21st century .

In November 2010, the Holy Bishops' Council decided to establish a new diocese on the territory of Austria and Switzerland [3] [4] [5] [6] .

The diocese was formed on May 26, 2011 by decision of the Council of Bishops of the SEC . The territory of Austria and Switzerland and Liechtenstein [7] were separated from the Central European Diocese , and the territory of Italy from the Zagreb-Ljubljana Metropolis . The bishop of Bach, Irenaeus (Bulovich), was appointed administrator of the diocese. [8] [9]

In May 2013, by decision of the Holy Bishops' Council, the only Serbian parish in Malta , formerly subordinate to the British-Scandinavian diocese , was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Austrian-Swiss diocese [1] .

In March 2014, in Vienna , where the number of Serbs is ~ 100 thousand people, the Catholic Cathedral of Neulerhenfeld was transferred to the diocese [10] [11] .
