The national park occupies part of the eponymous archipelago in the north of the Gulf of Bothnia . It includes two relatively large islands, Sandsher and Cescar Fure, as well as many small islands and shallows. The Finnish national park Peryameri adjoins to it from the east.
All islands of the archipelago appeared over the past 1500 years as a result of the rise of land after the ice age . Today they continue to rise by about 8.5 mm per year, while their area is increasing. The islands are characterized by sand dunes.
