History
The name Blue Noses arose in 1999 during the Shelter Beyond The Time (Shelter Out of Time) art event. The media then scared readers with the “2000 mistake," reporting that computer operating systems were not designed for the third millennium. Therefore, the organizers of the action decided to stage the impending man-made disaster and come up with art that has lost high technology. For this, a group of artists from different countries was locked up for three days in a bomb shelter in the center of Novosibirsk without hours, alcohol and communication with the outside world. Four Novosibirsk artists - Dmitry Bulnygin, Maxim Zonov, Vyacheslav Mizin and Konstantin Skotnikov, together with photographer Evgeny Ivanov, shot a series of video sketches that later became widely known as “Blue Noses Represent 11 Performances in a Bunker”. To emphasize the stylistics of the television clowning, the artists stuck blue corks from drinking water bottles on their noses.
In the same 1999, Vyacheslav Mizin and Alexander Shaburov began to collaborate with the Gelman Gallery in Moscow, where they made a number of joint projects, but for a long time resisted the name “Blue Noses” that stuck to them. Only in 2003, they reconciled with this and began to consciously work together, parodying the technology of creating and promoting the brand. Konstantin Skotnikov, Evgeny Ivanov and Konstantin Guryanov participated in separate projects of Blue Noses. Maxim Zonov, who invented to put on his nose dishes for fast foods, died in a car accident in 2001 .
The group took part in the 50th and 51st Venice Biennale , the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art , the ArtKlyazma festival and many others. other exhibitions.
The works of Blue Noses repeatedly caused scandals, were delayed by customs and were the subject of legal proceedings, which is why Mizin and Shaburov jokingly call themselves “the most forbidden artists of Russia”. In October 2007, the works of Blue Noses from the Sots Art exhibition at the State Tretyakov Gallery , which was supposed to move to Paris , were publicly criticized by the Minister of Culture of Russia A. Sokolov . In particular, the work “ Era of Mercy ” was called “pornography” and “the shame of Russia” [1] [2] .
What is Blue Noses?
“Blue Noses” are the direct descendants of the “Blue Blouse”, the revolutionary acrobatic propaganda brigades of the 1920s. We are used to, Mizin and Shaburov say, that a poet in Russia is more than a poet, an artist is more than an artist ... And if so, art should speak out on significant topics. Illustrate newspaper headlines. In the afternoon - in the newspaper, in the evening - in the lightbox, banner or video art! Affect pioneers and senior citizens. “Blue Noses” set a mirror in front of us, and it turned out that instead of our heads we had beer, cigarettes and Bin Laden . Let's clear our brains of garbage! ” [3]
