Story
France , the 20s of the XVII century. The reign of King Louis XIII .
The all-powerful Cardinal Richelieu forbade dueling in the country, but few of the nobles adhere to this law. Among the duelists was the Spaniard Villarial, forced to leave Paris after killing the enemy in a duel and hiding in the province of Berry - in the castle of Bois-Doré (Bois-Doré, letter. "Gilded").
The hospitable owner of the castle - the elderly Marquis Sylvanas de Bois-Dore - a noble and courageous nobleman, formerly a Huguenot and supporter of King Henry IV , who retired from political and military affairs after the death of the king (1610), now lives in his family castle a calm and measured life. However, the active nature of the Marquis does not accept such an existence: he is attracted by adventure, dangerous battles, love.
Sylvanas has been in love with the young beauty Lorianne de Beauvre for many years. She is fond of the novel “Astrea” by Honore d'Urfe and dreams of building her life in accordance with it. The young girl is attracted by the history of the castle of Bois-Dore, she likes the beautiful gentlemen of this kind, she does not mind becoming Madame de Bois-Dore, but she is not in a hurry with marriage.
Once in the woods near the castle of the Marquis rescues from the robbers a young gypsy Mario, who turned out to be the nephew of the Marquis. Lorianne is confused and no longer knows who to give preference to, a series of events leads her to the monastery.
Meanwhile, with the support of local abbot Pullen, the cunning and ambitious Villarial, hoping to be forgiven for murder in a duel, agrees to become Prince Conde’s spy in the castle of a gullible marquise, suspecting the latter of concealing the treasures of the Huguenots stolen during the religious wars of the second half of the 16th century . The ingenuous and honest Bois-Dore, learning about the Spaniard's involvement in the murder of his brother, as well as his persistent harassment in Lorianne, kills the villain in a duel.
Having finished with their enemies, Sylvanas and Mario go to war, where his nephew is stubbornly seeking death, and his uncle is trying to prevent this ...
Secrets, conspiracies, spies, revenge, treasures, prophecies, suddenly found relatives, gypsies and Spaniards under clearly assumed names, chases, dueling, storming the castle, sublime love and earthly love, treachery and nobility, all with a fair amount of humor. A true classic French film of the cloak and epee genre.
