Biography

The son of a Ryazan merchant, from childhood he felt attracted to art and learned to draw with almost no mentors. In 1826, he submitted a sample of his work to Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich , who took the young man under his protection and contributed to his admission to the public account at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts .

His closest supervisor at the Academy was Professor A. Warnek .

Having received two silver medals during the academic course, Zhivago graduated with the title of artist of the XIV class and soon went, to his own expense, to Italy , where he wrote copies of the paintings: “The Vision of Ezekiel” by Raphael , “Madonna della Pieta” with G. Reni , “Day” by Correggio and his own compositions: “Eve”, “Escape to Egypt”, “Disbelief of the Apostle Thomas” and others.

For these works, upon his return to St. Petersburg , in 1839 , he was recognized as an academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg . In 1842 he received the title of professor for the image of the Baptism of the Lord. From 1848 to 1850 he served at St. Petersburg Customs as an expert on the recognition of industrial works brought from abroad. In 1860 he moved to live in Moscow , where he worked until the end of his life. Among the paintings of Zhivago, in addition to those mentioned, the image in St. Isaac's Cathedral (“The Last Supper” [2] and “Prayer for the Chalice”, above the royal gates, and ten images of the Old Testament patriarchs and prophets in the 3rd tier of the main iconostasis ) and in some Moscow and Ryazan churches.
