Biography
Starova Natalya Vladimirovna was born on July 15, 1923 in the village of Polyana, Belgorod Region. From 1941 to 1942 she worked as a teacher in a school in the city of Karaganda, then 2 years as a pioneer leader of the Kompaniysky orphanage.
In 1948, Starova graduated from the Kharkov Agricultural Institute and from 1951 to 1965 she worked as a researcher at the Stepnoi Forest Experiment Station (Stepnoy, Stavropol Territory), then at the Ukrainian Research Institute of Forestry and Agroforestry (Kharkov, 1965–1983); Head of the Laboratory of the Department of Biochemistry and Cytochemistry, BFAN USSR (1983–1988), Deputy Director of the Institute of Biology, BSC Ural Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Head of the Botanical Garden (1988–1991), acting Director (1991–1998), chief research fellow (1998–2005) of the Botanical Garden-Institute of the Ufa Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The area of scientific interest of Starova was selection of forest woody plants, forest population genetics, ecological genetics. She managed to develop new varieties of poplars and willows, to reveal patterns of inheritance of some characters of woody plants, to create a clonal biological model of heterosis.
Starova - Honorary Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus (1995, Department of Biological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus), Doctor of Biological Sciences (1974), Professor (1990). She created a school of forest population genetics and breeding in Bashkiria. Among her students are 4 doctors and 16 candidates of sciences.
