The version for slot machines was released in 1983 . A simple gameplay based on rapidly repeating button presses laid the foundations for sequels and similar games of the same genre for the next decades. There were several versions for home consoles and computers. Versions for the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC were released as part of the Game, Set and Match II collection in 1988 and were negatively received by users [1] [2] . The NES version received especially good reviews and sold well.

Gameplay

In the original arcade game, two “run” buttons are used for control (in later versions, a trackball , since the buttons constantly broke) and one action button. The player controlled by the athlete could participate in 6 competitions:

  • Running 100 meters - the speed depends on the speed of alternating button presses.
  • Long jump - running with alternate button presses, the action button, pressed at the right time, allows you to choose the angle for the jump (optimal - 42 degrees).
  • Javelin throwing - running with alternate button presses, the action button, pressed at the right time, allows you to select a throwing angle (optimal - 43 degrees).
  • 110 meters run with barriers - the speed of the run depends on the speed of alternating button presses, the action button serves to jump over the obstacle.
  • Hammer throwing - Pressing the run button once starts rotation, at the right moment you need to press the action button to select the throwing angle (optimal - 45 degrees).
  • High jump - After the run (with the speed set by the computer), you need to press the action button in order to determine the angle of the jump. After taking off the ground, you must quickly press the run button to increase the height.

Each competition has a qualification time or level that a player must reach in order to advance to the next event. Failure to qualify (in one race for running sports, in three attempts for the rest) reduces the number of player lives by one. After the lives are spent, the game will end.

The game can participate up to four players who compete in pairs in running modes and individually in the rest. If the game has less than 4 players, the remaining places are filled by computer players. The comparative achievements of the players do not play a role, the passing of the game is based only on qualification results.

If a player completes all six competitions, after a short awards ceremony, the game starts anew with advanced skill levels. However, the game can be set to end after the final match.
