Study History

The species was discovered in 1887 by the German entomologist Martin Jacobi , who discovered it in the vicinity of the sleeping volcano Chiriki [1] and attributed it to the genus Diabrotica , giving the name Diabrotica maculicolle [2] . After the genus Amphelasma [4] was isolated in 1947, this species was assigned to it, having received its modern name - Amphelasma maculicolle [2] .

Description

Length ≈6.5 mm (3 lines [5] ).

The body is oblong ovoid, with an expanded back. The head and chest are brown, the surface of the latter is deeply pitted with four black spots. Three black strips (suture and marginal) intersect the elytra surface from the base to the apex, and is covered with dense half-wrinkled punctures (semirugose-punctato) [5] .

Amphelasma decoratum is the most closely related Amphelasma maculicolle species [5] .

Amphelasma maculicolle is most closely related to the species Amphelasma decoratum , it differs from the latter:

  • lack of black spots on the head;
  • significantly more pronounced dimple of the sculpture of the surface of the thorax with only a few fine punctures and covered with larger black spots (located in the same way as in Amphelasma decoratum );
  • the black suture strip on the elytra is gradually tapering in the direction from their base to the apex [5] .

Distribution

The species is endemic to Panama [2] .
