Biography
Joseph Calvan was born in the village of Ε aloi (now the territory of the Republic of Latvia ) on January 13 ( January 25 in a new style) in 1896 into a peasant family. In 1915 he was called up for service in the tsarist army. He participated in the First World War , rose to the rank of senior non-commissioned officer . In 1918 he joined the Bolshevik party , in December of that year he voluntarily went to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . He took part in the Civil War, went from the chief of the border guard outpost to the commander of the 502nd Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Army [1] .
Repeatedly distinguished in the battles of the Civil War. On May 5, 1920, a battalion under the command of Joseph Calvan received the task of knocking out enemy troops from their positions between the town of Pyshno and the village of Slobodka, and, despite the enemy's numerical superiority, he successfully coped with this task. On May 7, near the village of Chernitsa, the Kalvan battalion led the battalion three times in the attack, while it was wounded, but did not leave the battlefield, continuing to fight and successfully completing the combat mission. By order of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Republic No. 572 of November 13, 1920, Joseph Kalwan was awarded the Order of the Red Banner [1] .
On June 20, 1920, Calwan distinguished himself during the battles during the Soviet-Polish war , in particular, the attack on Warsaw . By order of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Republic No. 353 of December 31, 1921, Joseph Kalwan was awarded the second Order of the Red Banner [1] .
On June 24, 1920, the assistant commander of the rifle regiment Kalvan distinguished himself in a battle near the village of Zoloteevki-Zaboloty. By order of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Republic No. 105 of April 19, 1924, Joseph Kalwan was awarded the third Order of the Red Banner [1] .
After the war, Calwan continued to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1922 he graduated from the Higher Rifle School, in 1929 - the Military Academy of the Red Army . He commanded a rifle regiment, then the Leningrad Infantry School .
In 1934 - 1935 - commander-commissar of the Karelian huntsman brigade . Member of the CEC of the Autonomous Karelian SSR.
In 1935-1937 - commander-commissar of the 4th Turkestan Rifle Brigade, commander of the 7th Rifle Corps. Participated in battles with basmachi formations. In 1937, Calwan was appointed commander of the 7th Rifle Corps [1] .
December 2, 1937 Calvan was arrested by the NKVD of the USSR . On February 20, 1938, the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR sentenced him to capital punishment - the death penalty . The sentence was carried out. The decision of the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR of October 6, 1956, Calwan was posthumously rehabilitated [1] .
