Publication History

The Wonder Man, created by writer Stan Lee and artists Jack Kirby and Don Heck, made his debut in The Avengers No. 9 (dated October 1964) and, after an apparent death, was seen again in The Avengers No. 102 (August 1972), where he appeared in a coma. The body of Wonder Man was restored by the villain Kang at The Avengers No. 131-132 in January-February 1975, then with the Black Claw in The Avengers No. 152 in October 1976, and finally with the Living Laser at The Avengers No. 6 in 1976. After this, Wonder Man finally regained his abilities and joined the Avengers in The Avengers No. 160 in June 1977.

In 1978, character creator Stan Lee said:

“You know, a few years ago we created Wonder Man, and DC Comics sued us because they had Wonder Woman , and ... I said,“ Okay, I will stop Wonder Man. ” And suddenly they have Power Girl (after the Power Girl ) (after Marvel introduced Strongman ( born Power Man )). Wow. How unfair. ” [2]

"You know, years ago we brought out Wonder Man, and [DC Comics] sued us because they had Wonder Woman, and ... I said okay, I'll discontinue Wonder Man. And all of a sudden they've got Power Girl [after Marvel had introduced Power Man]. Oh boy. How unfair. "

The Wonder Man later appeared as a founding member of the West Coast Avengers in the first four editions of the West Coast Avengers (September-December 1984), and continued to appear as one of the main characters in the 102-episode series. After the group split up, he joined the Power Work team in a series that debuted in July 1994. After this team split up, Wonder Man joined the Avengers in The Avengers Vol. 3 No. 4 (May 1998). Following the collapse of the Avengers in The Avengers # 503 (December 2004), Wonder Man joined the new breakaway group called the Mighty Avengers in March 2007.

Wonder Man appeared in the graphic novel of the same name in 1986. Then came the 29 issues of the Wonder Man series (September 1991 - February 1994), followed by the three issues of the Avengers Two series : Wonder Man and the Beast (2000). In 2007, he appeared in 5 episodes of the Wonder Man: My Fair Super Hero series .

Wonder Man rarely appeared in the Avengers series from 2010 to 2013, but plays an important role in the End Times storyline in episodes No. 31 (December 2012) and No. 34 (January 2013).

Biography

The first appearance of Wonder Man on the cover of The Avengers No. 9 (October 1964), artist - Jack Kirby

Simon Williams inherited an ammunition plant from his father after his father died, and his older brother Eric did not want to take over. Although Simon was a talented scientist, he was not a capable businessman, and the company began to fail, giving way to more successful companies such as Stark Industries, led by Tony Stark . Eric invited Simon to invest in his business, which turned out to be illegal, associated with the criminal organization Maggia . Subsequently, Simon was exposed and went to prison, accusing Tony Stark of his downfall.

Simon was freed with the help of Baron Zemo and his Masters of Evil. He agreed to undergo an experiment in order to obtain superhuman powers, and Zemo exposed him to ion radiation, making him a Wonder Man, warning that he would die without further treatment procedures carried out by the Baron to guarantee his loyalty. By the will of Zemo, Simon supported the Avengers, pretending to be their ally, and lured the team into a trap. However, at the last minute he repented and saved the Avengers from the Lords of Evil, as it turned out later, at the cost of his own life.

In fact, Simon fell into a death-like coma. Before he was buried, samples of his brain were extracted for scientific purposes (and later used to implant into Vision Android). Simon's body before the funeral was captured by his brother, now known as the Grim Reaper, who had already fought against the Avengers, accusing them of Simon's death. The reaper wanted to use the body to bribe Vision to receive the human body. Vision refused, then it was first shown that Vision’s mind was based on Simon’s brain samples.

Eric later attempted to resurrect Simon's body with Black Claw witchcraft, and Wonder Man was used as a zombie to attack the Avengers. Instead, Simon returned to consciousness with the Living Laser, which possessed a powerful artifact - the Snake Crown. Subsequently, the Avengers accepted Wonder Man as a loyal ally, and he was later elected as a full member of the team. His presence was always a source of tension for Vision, who felt insecure, since Simon was the source of his “life”. Once, Wonder Man and Vision were placed at the trial of the Grim Reaper to determine which of them was the “real” Simon Williams. Simon was accepted by Eric as a “real” brother, but Wonder Man defeated the Reaper to save the Avengers.

Simon's effectiveness as a fighter was limited by the fear of death, despite which he helped the Avengers fight against enemies such as Ultron and Count Nefaria, and in the end he crushed him to play a key role in the fight between the Avengers and the powerful villain Corvak. Shortly afterwards, Simon left the Avengers to become an actor, although he would find much more use as a stuntman in Hollywood . From time to time, he returned to the Avengers to help them as needed.

Simon was one of the Avengers when they opened their branch on the West Coast. Although he continued to struggle with the fear of death, he largely overcame it with the emotional support of Hank Pym and Vision . After public repentance, Simon received the general recognition of society, which ultimately helped him get the main role in the film "Arkon IV", becoming a true Hollywood celebrity.

Simon stays with the West Coast Avengers. During this time, he continued his acting career and he has a romantic relationship with screenwriter Alex Flores. He decided not to stay with the Avengers, and instead began to live in an apartment in Los Angeles , where he made friends with many neighbors.

When Vision became an insensitive robot after the seeming destruction of his artificial intelligence, Simon refused to allow the Avengers to duplicate parts of his brain to restore the android. The scarlet witch, Vision's wife, began to avoid Simon for his refusal, which actually stemmed from the fact that she was Simon's subconscious hobby. In the end, he agreed to allow duplication of his brain after the distraught Scarlet Witch suffered a mental breakdown, but Vision rejected this offer because he realized that the duplicated models of Simon's brain would not completely restore his lost identity, but only create its semblance. Simon became very supportive and attentive to the Scarlet Witch after she recovered from a nervous breakdown, he even strove for romance, and met her for a short time. However, they eventually broke up.

In later adventures, Simon joined the Avengers to stop the alien races of Kriya and Shi'ar , which made the Earth a battleground in their internecine warfare. The Shi'ar developed massive "Nega Bombs" to destroy the Kree Empire, Simon and Vision tried to stop them. Instead, they were caught in an explosion. Simon discovered that his abilities mutate, undermining his mental and physical stability (for example, he later found out that his strength fluctuated with his emotional state, increasing when he was angry). He radiated so much ionic energy that he began to change others. His flatmates got superpower, forming for a short time a team called Crazy Eight . Ultimately, Simon's instability forced him to leave the Avengers. When he was struggling with a new ailment, he tried to develop his affair with Alex Flores and make her an offer.

Simon eventually returned to reunite with the West Coast Avengers, but they were already disbanded then. Simon got in touch with Iron Man and joined a new team called Power Works . During one of the team’s missions, Simon was killed when he intercepted a bomb dropped on potential alien invaders.

Simon was accidentally mysteriously resurrected by the Scarlet Witch during her capture of the sorceress Morgana Le Fey. He continued to exist as an incorporeal energy connected with the earthly path by his unrequited love for Wanda. He seemed to once again sacrifice his life in order to save the Avengers from the fairy of the Morgana, after which he began to periodically appear in the immediate vicinity of the Scarlet Witch as an energy ghost when she needed help or felt lonely. Without fully resurrecting, Simon was stuck in an intermediate state until the Scarlet Witch was finally able to resurrect Simon's body, realizing her love for him.

Simon decided to stay in the Avengers mansion, exploring his relationship with the Scarlet Witch during a joint service in the team, not being its members. He tried to restore his brotherly relationship with Vision, who remained aloof. Simon continued to struggle with guilt and because of the many mistakes and misconduct that he committed. He learned that his ex-bride Alex Flores fell in love with someone and was happy in marriage, after which they broke up in a good relationship. Finally, he founded the Second Chance Fund , a non-profit charitable organization aimed at helping people in need, managed by his old agent Neil Saroyan and funded by Simon’s films.

Simon began dividing his time between the Avengers and the Second Chance Foundation , trying to keep his relationship with the Scarlet Witch at a distance. When Kang tried to conquer the Earth, he placed many citizens in large camps, including Simon and Wanda. Being in captivity, both realized that they were no longer in love with each other. Kang was eventually defeated by the Avengers, after which Simon returned to California and the Second Chance Foundation .

Strengths and Abilities

After becoming a creature from ionic energy, Simon received various superpowers. Wonder Man can lift over 100 tons. Wonder-human skin was rated 9 on the Mohs scale (normal human tissue is 1 and diamond is 10). Having received the ionic form, Simon has an almost unlimited amount of resistance and no longer needs food, water and air to survive, nor does he age. A miracle man uses his ionic energy in many ways, he can shoot with energy explosions, change his shape, and also fly at high speeds using an ionic push.

Simon Williams is an advanced engineer and has great skills in mechanics.
