The company Jaguar was founded in 1922, first as the Swallow Sidecar Company and produced motorized carts. After World War II, the name was changed to “Jaguar” to avoid the unfavorable combination of “ SS ”. In 1966, it merged with the British Motor Corporation, which became known as British Motor Holdings (BMH), in 1968 it merged with the Layland Motor Corporation and was renamed British Leyland. In 1975 the company was nationalized.

Jaguar was separated from British Leyland and went to the London Stock Exchange in 1984 and until 1990 its shares were part of the FTSE 100 index until the automaker was acquired by Ford . Recently, Jaguar manufactures cars for the Prime Minister of Great Britain [6] , the latter was given the XJ model in May 2010, as well as for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles . Since 1987, [7] Jaguars have been developed at the Jaguar Land Rover engineering center at the Utley plant in Coventry and at the Gadon Center in Warwickshire . Produced at the Castle Bromwich assembly plant in Birmingham , it is expected that part of the production will begin in Solihull .

In September 2013, plans were announced to open an R & D center at Warwick University in Coventry, worth £ 100 million to create a new generation of automotive technology. The automaker said that about 1,000 scientists and engineers will work on this, and that the design will begin in 2014. [eight]

The company's existence began in the 20s of the XX century. At that time, she was a Sidecar Swallow company, and produced motorcycle strollers. This did not bring much income, after which the company changed its specialization in the production of components for Austin 7. After a large order made in 1927, the income allowed the company to expand its production and produce component models Fiat 509A , Morris Cowley , Wolseley Hornet , and then began to design and develop new car models.

In the middle of the 20th century, the company changed its name to Jaguar, since the initials of the SS company were associated with the Nazi regimes after the war. At the same time, the Jaguar Mk VII appeared , in which the engine power was increased to 190 horsepower. In 1950, Jaguar began cooperation with the company Daimler Motor Company (not to be confused with Daimler-Benz), which produced cars that were close to the Jaguars. Since 1960, Daimler has become a part of Jaguar. The company itself, which began to have difficulties with sales, in 1966 began to cooperate and became part of British Motor. Since that time, Jaguar models have become increasingly popular.

By the 1960s, the Jaguar concern was conquering the American market with the Jaguar XK150 and XK150 Roadster with an engine capacity of up to 3.4 liters. From the 1960s to the 1980s, a series of sports models were produced, as well as sedans, which were sold at a high price, but were of improved quality.

In the late 1960s, the Jaguar model was released with an upgraded 6-cylinder engine. After some time, in the early 1970s, the production of the Jaguar XJ12 began, with a 12-cylinder engine, with a capacity of 311 horsepower. From 1968 to 1983, the following models were released: Jaguar XJ8 - sedan, XJR 4.0 Supercharged, Jaguar XJ-C - coupe, Jaguar XJ-S - the AJ6 engine was first installed on it. In 1988, a new model was released, which again became widely known - the Jaguar XJ220 , but later it was changed and shown in Tokyo at the auto show.

In the late 1980s, a branch of the Jaguar Sport company was opened, producing sports car models. Then Jaguar becomes a branch of the company Ford. In the late 1990s, a model coupe sports car and a convertible were shown at the exhibition in Switzerland .

In 2000 - 2004 Jaguar cars again took part in Formula 1 racing as a Jaguar team using Cosworth engines . Especially for this, cars were released model F-Type Concept and Silverstone.

In 2019, the Jaguar I-Pace electric vehicle was awarded the 2018 Automobile in Europe award. You can also notice that the company receives this prize for the first time [9] .

In 2019, the company announced the flagship crossover J-Pace, based on a new, all-aluminum MLA platform, which is also planned to be used in the new generation of the Range Rover SUV. A car will lose a mechanical all-wheel drive — the rear axle will be driven by an electric motor , while the front axle will be driven by a traditional internal combustion engine [10] . The output of the car is scheduled for 2021.
