Biography

The youngest son of the Soviet party and statesman A. S. Shcherbakov ; brother of the pilot A. A. Shcherbakov and film expert K. A. Shcherbakov .

In 1961 he graduated from secondary school No. 110 in Moscow.

In 1967 he graduated from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute . In 1971 he defended his thesis, and in 1978 - his doctorate. In 1985 received the academic title of professor .

Since 1967, he worked at the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (LPI): first as an engineer and a junior research fellow , and since 1975, as a senior research fellow.

In 1976-1977 he was a visiting professor at the University of Southern California , and in 1979 at the University of Hamburg .

Since 1982, after the separation of the Institute of General Physics (IOF) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from the LPI, he has been working in the IOF. First he headed the laboratory, then - the department, later became the director of the department. In 1998 he was elected director of the institute.

On December 7, 1991, he was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the Section of Physics, Energy, Radio Electronics (optics). Since December 22, 2011 - full member of the RAS in the Department of Physical Sciences .

He is a member of the Presidium of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia . Member of the editorial board of the New Russian Encyclopedia and Editorial Board of the journal Quantum Electronics . I. A. Shcherbakov is also a member of the dissertation councils of the IOF RAS and Moscow State University , being the chairman of one of them. In addition, he is a member of several councils of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Scientific Achievements

His scientific interests lie in the field of laser physics , spectroscopy , nonlinear and quantum optics . In particular, he studied the processes of energy transfer of electronic excitations in solid solutions of rare-earth ions . In the course of this task, I. A. Shcherbakov revealed to a sufficient degree the general form of the relationship between the microscopic parameters that govern the transfer processes and the amount of energy relaxation in the entire ensemble of interacting particles.

The results obtained by I. A. Shcherbakov in the field of spectroscopy of laser materials : crystals and glasses are included in the reference literature. In addition, his theory of optically dense active media , which he constructed, made it possible to create a number of new optically active materials, on the basis of which new types of solid-state lasers were implemented, which have a number of unique characteristics.

I. A. Shcherbakov is trying to actively implement his developments in production, in particular, in medical applications.

In the process of his work, I. A. Shcherbakov became the head of 20 successful candidate dissertations, as well as eight doctoral theses.
