Reception
The character in the 2012 series was well received by critics and some critics called him and the Henderson game one of the most breakthrough heroes on television at the end of the year [7] . Especially the character was praised for its depth and ambiguity, which stood out against the background of the weak game of Jesse Metcalf , playing Christopher Ewing , a positive hero in history [7] .
Storylines
Original Series
During pregnancy, Sue Ellen starts drinking because she cannot leave her tyrant husband for Cliff Barnes . Concerned about the safety of her unborn child, Jayar sends Sue Ellen to the hospital in 1979, but she secretly continues to drink and leaves the clinic and gets into a car accident, during which she gives birth to a child, John Ross Ewing III. After the birth of her son, Sue Ellen falls into a deep depression and does not show interest in the child. John Ross is loved by all members of the Ewing family, with the exception of Sue Ellen, who is experiencing postpartum depression. At this time, Pamela Ewing, who cannot have children, becomes his mother, and Jay Ar, meanwhile, also shows no interest in the child, thinking that his sworn enemy, Cliff Barnes is the father of John Ross. In the end, Cliff does a blood test and it turns out that Jay Ar is the father of the child.
When Sue Ellen begins an affair with the rodeo cowboy Dusty Farlow and enters the society of anonymous alcoholics, he finds the strength to start raising his child and leave her husband, but Jay Ar arranges the death of Dusty in a plane crash, which leads her to alcohol. When she finds out that Dusty is alive, she leaves her husband and picks up John Ross. She gets divorced and gets custody of the child, although Jay Ar continues to try to ruin her life and take her son. Their relationship with Dusty was not so long and in the end she returned to Dallas and married Jay Ara for the second time, although they divorced in 1988, after she became financially independent from him.
Throughout childhood, John Ross remains the subject of a divide between Sue Ellen and Jay Ar and this affects the psyche of a child who has to regularly communicate with psychologists. As a teenager, he ceases to communicate with his parents and lives in a private college in Europe. In 1989, Sue Ellen moved to London with his new friend and soon established relations with John Ross and he remained to live with his mother.
Revival Series
In the 2012 series, the adult John Ross appears as the main antagonist of the show and practically follows in the footsteps of his father, becoming just as immoral, insatiable and thirsty to possess oil [1] . In the first season, he meets with Elena Ramos , daughter of the Ewing cook, as well as with the mentally unhealthy swindler Marta del Sol and his image throughout the season ranges from a villain to a protogonist [8] [9] . Although the character changed throughout the season, in the final, he ultimately decides to team up with his father to get a family ranch and everything connected with it [10] .
In the second season, John Ross continues his plans to gain control of Ewing Energies. During this, he begins to collaborate with Pamela Rebecca Barnes to trick Christopher, and an affair begins between them. Meanwhile, Jay Ar dies under mysterious circumstances, which greatly affects all Ewing. In a joint collaboration between Pamela and John Ross, real feelings arise [11] . When she loses her twins, John Ross is with her and helps her deal with this. In the thirteenth episode of season two, Pamela secretly marries John Ross [12] .
