Vladimir Toporov ( July 5, 1928 , Moscow - December 5, 2005 , ibid.) - Soviet and Russian linguist , philologist , full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1990). He was engaged in research in the field of Slavic , Indology , Baltics and Indo-European Studies [1] . One of the founders of the Moscow-Tartu semiotic school . The creator (with Vyach. Sun. Ivanov ) of the “ theory of the main myth ”.

Biography
He graduated from the philological faculty of Moscow State University (1951) and graduate school there (1954). Junior and Senior Researcher (1954–1961), Leading Researcher, Head of the Structural Typology Sector, Chief Researcher at the Institute of Slavonic and Balkan Studies (1961–2005). Doctor of Philology (1988), Chief Researcher at the Institute of Higher Humanitarian Studies of the RSUH (since 1992), full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1991; Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in the Department of Literature and Language since December 15, 1990 ), full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences natural sciences "(1993).
Member of the editorial boards of scientific journals “Balto-Slavic Studies” (1980–2005), “ Questions of Linguistics ”, “Etymology” (1963–2005), “Linguistica Baltica”, “International Journal of Poetics” (1992–2005), “Kodikas” (1992–2005), Proverbium (1992–2005), Russian Literature (1997–2005), and others. Member of the international editorial board of the Arbor Mundi magazine (The World Tree).
Member of Academia Europaea , International Semiotic Society, International Language Origin Society, member of the International Philosophic Peirce Society. Honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of Latvia . Doctor honoris causa of Vilnius University . Member of the Semiotic Society of the United States.
He died on December 5, 2005 in Moscow, and was buried in the Pyatnitsky cemetery [2] .
Awards
Laureate of the State Prize (1990) - for participating in the work on the encyclopedia " Myths of the Nations of the World " (in protest against the tragic events in Vilnius on January 13, 1991, he refused the prize), A. Solzhenitsyn Prize (1998) [3] , prizes named after Andrei Bely (2003).
He was awarded the Order of Honor (1997), the Lithuanian Order of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas (1999) and the highest award of Latvia - the Order of the Three Stars (2002).

- folklore , religion and mythology , cultural studies , spiritual culture, semiotics on the material of Indo-European ethno-linguistic traditions, especially Slavic (with an emphasis on Russian), Baltic, Indo-Iranian, ancient.
In 1960, Toporov was the first to translate completely into Russian and put into circulation the most important text of the Pali canon of Theravada , Dhammapad (423 aphorisms of the Buddha), resuming the Bibliotheca Buddhica series, which was interrupted during repressions in the USSR in 1938.
Family
He was a husband and a frequent co-author of the orientalist T. Ya. Elizarenkova (1929–2007). Two daughters also became humanities scholars: Tatiana (born 1960) is a leading researcher at the Institute of Linguistics [4] , Anna (born 1963) is a leading researcher at the Institute of World Literature [5] . Sister Irina (1940–2015) is an Africanist linguist.
