History
The Bryansk State Museum of Local Lore (BGKM) was opened for visiting in September 1921. Then it was called the Bryansk Provincial Museum. Its creator and first director was a talented local historian and archaeologist Sergey Sergeyevich Deev. The museum of that period had about 2 thousand exhibits.
The exposition of the Bryansk Provincial Museum in 1921 had two departments. Since 1933, the museum became known as the museum of local lore. In the pre-war years, his expositions enjoyed well-deserved popularity among the working people and students of the city.
During the occupation of Bryansk by Nazi troops, the exhibits, scientific support materials and the museum library, which totaled more than 8 thousand volumes of historical literature, were lost.
On September 17, 1943, Soviet troops, together with the Bryansk partisans, liberated the city from invaders, and on October 8, the Bryansk City Council decided “On the creation of a city museum”.
Five years of hard work was required in order to re-form collections and build a new exhibition. Therefore, the year 1949 can be considered the year of the second birth of the museum, which reopened its doors for visitors already as the Bryansk Regional Local Lore ...
Since 1980, BGOKM has been leading the association of museums in the region, which includes 13 branches (7 local history, 5 military historical, 1 literary and memorial). Employees of the association provide practical assistance in the creation of school and departmental museums.
In 2016, the Bryansk Planetarium became part of the museum.
