Biography and Creativity

Born in Normandy. His older brother was a chamberlain under the brother of Louis XIV . But Rene, of his own free will, chose a spiritual rank for himself and was educated at a Jesuit college in Rouen . He entered the seminary, studied for two years, when he suddenly disappeared. Only six months later did his family receive the news that he had entered the Capuchin monastery in Argentan ; cut his hair and took the name of Zechariah. Due to a sore leg, he succumbed to the exhortations of relatives and left the monastery; At 22, he entered the abbey of the Premonstrants ( abbaye des Prémontrés ) in Valseri , where obedience was less severe than that of the Capuchins. Thanks to his talents and scholarship, he became secretary of the abbot, and later received his parish near Marley .

With the support of his friends, Fontenel and Abbot de Saint-Pierre , he wrote and published in 1639 the essay Histoire de la conjuration de Portugal , which was a great success. Seven years later he published the History of Coups in Sweden ( Histoire des Révolutions de Suède ), which brought him fame as a historian. The Swedish court instructed his charge d'affaires in Paris to invite him to write the history of Sweden; the solicitor sought the historian in the circle of writers and in a great light, but not among ordinary priests.

In 1701, the Academy of Inscriptions and Fine Literature was transformed by the king, and Abbot Verto was admitted to its members, which obliged him to move and live in Paris. In Paris, he was secretary of the Duchess of Orleans, for whose memoirs he wrote many historical articles.

In 1710, he published Traité de la mouvance de Bretagne. Then a Roman story entitled: "Histoire des révolutions de la république romaine."

In 1726, he compiled the history of the Maltese knights from the archives of the order ( Histoire de l'ordre de Malte , Paris, 1726; new edition, continued by Bussy, 1859).

By this time, his health was completely upset; his desire to write the history of the coups of Poland and Carthage was interrupted by the death of June 15, 1735 in the Palais Royal .
