The Ivan Vazov National Theater ( Bulgarian. Ivan Vazov National Theater ) is the national drama theater in the capital of Bulgaria , Sofia , named after the classic Bulgarian drama Ivan Vazov . It is the main theater stage in Bulgaria.

The Ivan Vazov National Theater is the oldest and most respected theater in Bulgaria after its liberation, it is the successor to the metropolitan drama group "Tear and Laughter" ( Bulgarian. Salza and smyakh ), which was transformed into the Bulgarian National Theater in 1904, from 1906 to 1952 - The National Theater, in 1952-62 it was called the National Theater of Krustyu Sarafov, then in 1962 - 77 years and since 1982 it was constantly called the National Theater of Ivan Vazov. General Information
The Ivan Vazov National Theater is located in a luxurious purpose-built theater building at the address: ul. Ignatia Dyakona, d. 5, city of Sofia-1000 (Bulgaria).
The theater building was erected in 1906 according to the design of the Bureau Fellner & Gelmer. The building underwent several fires, but was reconstructed each time.
Currently, the Sofia National Theater has modern equipment and a large stage with 750 seats, as well as a chamber hall with 120 seats and a stage on the fourth floor with 70 seats for spectators.
Currently, the director of the theater is Pavel Vasev ( Bulgarian. Pavel Vasev ).
Theater Building
The building of the National Theater was built near the former princely palace in Sofia (today it is the building of the National Art Gallery) according to the design of the Austrian architectural bureau Bureau Fellner & Gelmer. The construction was completed at the end of 1906 , and solemnly opened for performances on January 3, 1907.
In 1923 , during the performance, a fire broke out, which caused significant damage to the building. The theater was finally restored in 1929 according to the project of the German architect Martin Dülfer , the work was directed by the Bulgarian civil engineer Kirill Chaparov ( Bulgarian. Kirill Chaparov ).
During the bombing of Sofia during the Second World War (1943-44), the building of the National Theater was seriously damaged. It was restored in 1945. The latest reconstruction of the theater took place in 1971-75, at the same time a special chamber hall was created.
In 2007, repairs were carried out at the Ivan Vazov National Theater, the facade, roof, sculptures, etc. were updated.
In the painting of the facades, paints containing rubber were used, which increases the endurance of the walls in various weather conditions. Gilded decorative elements were re-plated with gold leaf.
National Theater 1904-1944
After the creation of the theater, Josef Schmaha became the main director of the theater. In the theater school opened in 1925, a new generation of talented artists was brought up. In the 1920s and 30s, when Vladimir Vasilev was the director for almost 2 decades.
Among the leaders of the National Theater in Sofia in September 9, 1944 - Il. Milarov, Pencho Slaveykov , and among the directors - Ivan Popov, B. Angelov, V. Yordanov, Art. L. Kostov and others. Among the directors, playwrights and artists of that time, Yuri D. Yakovlev, Nikolai Liliev , Nikolai Massalitinov , Khrisan Tsankov, Ivan Penkov, Ivan Milev left a noticeable mark in the history of the collective.
Theater in the Post-War BNR
Despite the ideological blindness and supervision, as well as the dominance in the art of the dogmas of the so-called socialist realism, on the stage of the National Theater in Sofia in the post-war period there were performances of a high artistic level, mainly classical works of Bulgarian and world drama.
The leading directors of the theater during the time of socialism are Stefan Sirchadzhiev, Philip Filippov, Hristo Mirsky, Encho Khalachev, Nikolay Lutskanov, Moses Benesh, Mladen Kiselov, Krikor Azaryan and others.
The theater continues the traditions of luminaries, among whom was Adriana Budevskaya , and his actor’s face at that time was determined by: Tanya Massalitinova, Margarita Duparinova, Slavka Slavova, Mila Pavlova, Andrey Chaprazov, Rachko Yabanjiev, Asen Milanov, Spas Jonev, Apostle Karamitev , Yordan Matev, Stefan Getsov , Lubomir Kabakchiev and many other actors.
After 1989
Since the beginning of the 1990s, the director of the theater has been Professor Vasily Stefanov, with a break for the period 2000-03.
As a result of democratic changes, the theater established direct relations with other theater groups in Europe, participated in a number of theater festivals and competitions.
The directors who have performed successfully in this decade include: Leon Daniel, Margarita Mladenova, Alexander Morfov , Ivan Dobchev.
Repertoire
The repertoire of the Ivan Vazov National Theater includes productions based on the works of famous European and world authors, as well as prominent representatives of Bulgarian literature.
So the 2010 theater poster includes both classical and experimental performances: “Snegiryov and his son Ilyusha” based on the novel “ The Brothers Karamazov ” by F. Dostoevsky , “ Cyrano de Bergerac ”, “The Cherry Orchard ”, “ Don Juan ”, etc. d.
