Biography
He studied theology and philosophy at the University of Halle . After receiving his doctorate at the University of Helmstedt , from 1810 he worked as a teacher of the gymnasium in Halle, then in 1812 became a professor. He taught the history of the ancient world at the university. In 1817 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Koenigsberg (Albertina), was the librarian of the university library, from 1821 - full professor in Koenigsberg.
Among his most famous students at the university were Georg Voight , Ferdinand Gregorovius and Karl Neumann .
Scientific activity
He was engaged in the study of ancient history under the influence of the works of scholars of antiquity by Friedrich August Wolf and Edward Gibbon .

His most important works were "Geschichte Roms in seinem Übergang von der republikanischen zur monarchischen Verfassung, oder: Pompeius, Caesar, Cicero und ihre Zeitgenossen" ( The history of Rome in its transition from the republic to the monarchy, or: Pompeii, Caesar, Cicero and them ) in 6 volumes (1834-1844).

Daughter Matilda (1824-1865) in 1852 married the inventor, founder of the well-known company Werner Siemens .
