Katherine Esau (Catherine (Katarina) Ivanovna Esau, April 16 (April 3 ) 1898 , Ekaterinoslav , Ukraine - April 4, 1997 , Santa Barbara , California , USA ) - German and American botanist , Doctor of Science ( 1932, Berkeley), professor, member of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington (1957). Her textbook "Plant Anatomy" in depth of scientific presentation and popularity refers to the classical world botanical literature.

Biography
Katherine Ezau is a descendant of the Mennonite Germans invited to Russia by the government for the development of agriculture and entrenched in the colony settlements in the Yekaterinoslav province . Father K. Ezau - Ivan Ezau was the mayor of Yekaterinoslav in 1905-1909. and 1918. After the revolution in Germany and the Germans left Ukraine at the end of 1918, the Esau family was forced to emigrate from Ukraine, first to Germany , and later, having received the invitation of the Mennonite Germans, to the United States (1922). The family found support in the United States and became an active participant in the life of the American Mennonite community.
She studied at the Yekaterinoslavsky Gymnasium, Moscow Golitsinsky Women's Agricultural College, and after emigrating from Russia (1918) at the Berlin Agrarian College. After moving to the United States (1922) she continued her studies at the University of California at Davis .
In 1932-1963 he was a professor at the University of California at Berkeley , Ph.D. (1932), professor of botany. Back in Germany, C. Esau became interested in research aimed at improving sugar beets (plant diseases and resistance to viruses). In the United States, she expanded her research interests to a fundamental study of plant anatomy.
In 1963, C. Esau left Berkeley and began working with her longtime colleague at the University of California, Santa Barbara , where W. Cheadle was rector. She worked at this university until 1992. Esau passed away on June 4, 1997 in Santa Barbara (California, USA).
Scientific Recognition and Awards
In 1957, C. Esau was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences , becoming the sixth woman to be awarded membership in this scientific community. In 1989, US President George W. Bush awarded C. Esau the United States National Science Medal .
