History

Background

The first professional volleyball club in Nizhny Novgorod in the post-Soviet history was established in July 1998 on the basis of the School № 4 of the Moscow Region . In the 1998/99 season, the Promstroi team took 1st place in the second league of the Russian Championship , and a year later finished third in the Premier League B. Then the Nizhny Novgorod team, renamed in 2000 as Energetik, and a year later as Dynamo-UVO, spent three seasons in the Premier League A, occupying the 8th, 6th and 5th places, respectively. However, in May 2003 , almost immediately after the completion of the most successful season , the leading players and head coach Oleg Vasilievich Savkin left the team experiencing financial difficulties and soon Dynamo-UVO ceased to exist [1] .

2008-2011: way up

In 2008, a new team was formed in Nizhny Novgorod, Oleg Savkin also became its head coach. In the season 2008/09 under the name SDUSHOR No. 4, she played in the first league and took 6th place in the final stage. Despite the fact that the team could not achieve the right to upgrade in the class according to the sporting principle, it was nevertheless provided with a ticket to the major league “B”. The team received support from the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Valery Shantsev , almost completely updated the composition and was renamed the "Gubernia" [2] . The former Dynamo-UVO leaders Ilya Sakeev and Aleksey Koshkin, who played for Grozny last season, resumed their sports careers as an international master of sports Sergey Ermishin , and Nizhniy Novgorod native Nikita , who was known for playing for the Dynamo Moscow , resumed his sports career. Lyamin , and the coaching staff was strengthened by Igor Pasechnik from Ufa. In the championship standings of the 2009/10 championship, “Guberniya” took second place after “Grozny” in both the preliminary and final stages and entered the Premier League “A”.

Before starting at a new level, the composition of the Nizhny Novgorod team was replenished with a binder Valentin Strilchuk and a follower Ruslan Askerov from Dynamo-LO , diagonal Igor Tyurin ( Dynamo Moscow ), central blockers Igor Nikiforov ( Lokomotiv-Izumrud ) and Alexander Sergienko ( Kristall " ), Libero Eugene Petropavlov ( Dynamo Krasnodar ). Throughout the 2010/11 season, Gubernia fought for the right to go to the Super League with Avtomobilist and Lokomotiv-Izumrud , took third place in the end, but was allowed to participate in the elite division championship in connection with its expansion to 16 teams. Thus, Oleg Savkin’s wards rose from the first league to the Super League in a record-breaking short period of three years, which previously only Dynamo Kazan and the Salavat Neftekhimik managed to do.

2011-2012: Super League debut

In the offseason, which preceded the team’s debut in the Super League, “Guberniya” was left by Sergey Andrievsky, Anatoly Mezhonnov and Valentin Strilchuk, completed his playing career and transferred to the position of coach of the team Sergey Ermishin, contracts were signed with the binder Maxim Shulgin and Oleg Samsonychevym diogrovschimov Vasily Nosenko, who last season, speaking for Gazprom-Ugra , became the most productive player in the championship of Russia. Before the start of the season, the team was joined by legionnaires - Finnish blocker Matti Oivanen and follower Nicola Kovačević , 2011 European champion in the Serbian national team . The general manager of the “Gubernia” was the famous Russian coach Pavel Viktorovich Borsch [3] . On October 1, 2011, Nizhny Novgorod volleyball players held their first match in the Super League, defeating Lokomotiv-Emerald at home 3-0. In mid-December, Igor Pasechnik was appointed to the position of head coach of the team, and Oleg Savkin focused on organizational work. "Province" took 7th place in the Eastern zone, after which she participated in the play-out games and finally took 11th place, which allowed to keep a residence permit in the strongest division.

2012–2013: Victory Series

In the summer of 2012, the “Guberniya” was headed by the Bulgarian coach Plamen Konstantinov , the line-up was significantly updated, which included one of the strongest diagonal championships in Russia Nikolay Pavlov , the leader of Ugra-Samotlor Sergey Savin , two new legionnaires - Finnish binder Mikko Esko and Serbian replayer Milos Nikic and bronze medalist of the 2008 Olympics blocking Alexei Ostapenko , who survived after the Olympics in Beijing, a serious injury, do not fall in the last years of the Moscow "Dynamo" , but in the coming season again floodplain shy their game. In January 2013, he joined the “Gubernia” and instantly became one of the team leaders Igor Shulepov .

“Province” took first place in the group of the semifinal stage of the Cup of the country , ahead of including the champion of the country “Zenith” , and for the second time in a row reached the final stage of the tournament. According to Plamen Konstantinov, at this time the team gained confidence in ownership of the forces, which resulted in a 13-match winning streak in the national championship [4] , which began on November 17 with the defeat of Dynamo in Moscow and was interrupted on March 6 by Iskra in Odintsovo [5] [6] . From the beginning of the second round to the completion of the preliminary stage, the “Gubernia” took first place in the Red Group, collecting full houses in the stands of the Zarechye Sports Palace [7] . In the quarterfinals, Nizhny Novgorod confidently beat the previous team of Plamen Konstantinov - “Gazprom-Ugra” , having also won a ticket to European cups, in the semi-final in a bitter struggle lost to the Ufa “Ural” , and in the series for third place - to Kazan “Zenith” [8] . The diagonal “Provinces” Nikolay Pavlov received a call to the Russian national team , in its composition became the winner of the World League and the European champion .

After a successful season, the “Province” retained all of its leading players and invited Alexei Kuleshov , Pavel Abramov , Makar Bestuzhev and Alexander Yanutov to strengthen the team game. The priority of the team was the performance in the European Volleyball Confederation Cup debut for him [9] . The wards of Plamen Konstantinov confidently moved towards the intended goal, directly on the way to the finals in difficult five-set matches they surpassed one of the favorites of the tournament - the Polish Skru , then defeated the French Pari Vole in the first home final match, but lost to the Parisians in the return match 1: 3 and 11:15 in the gold set that determined the owner of the trophy [10] .

The playoffs of the Russian Championship, Nizhny Novgorod, as a year earlier, began with a series of matches against Gazprom-Ugra and won it with a result of 2–2, having won a ticket to the Final Six. In Yekaterinburg, the “Province” lost in an equal fight to the future finalists of the championship - “Zenith” and “Lokomotiv” , and in the fight for 5th place, which gives the right to play in the Challenge Cup , it turned out to be stronger than “Kuzbass” . The team leader Nikolai Pavlov became the best player in the championship - the winner of the prize of Andrey Kuznetsov . Three players of the “Gubernia” were included in the application of the Russian national team for the World League 2014 . In addition to Pavlov, who made his bright debut in the national team last season, Alexey Ostapenko got a chance to return to it after 6 years and was first called up to the national team last season by Sergey Savin, who announced himself last season loudly [11] .

2014–2015: “Two Million Problems”

Since the beginning of the new season, the “Province” has experienced tremendous problems with the composition. Mikko Esko and Milos Nikic went to play in Turkish clubs, Alexey Ostapenko moved to the Italian “Piacenza”, and Nikita Lyamin continued his career in beach volleyball. The new legionnaires of the Nizhny Novgorod club - the Italian game player Matteo Martino and the central blocking team of Bulgaria Viktor Yosifov - arrived on the team with injuries. A significant part of the season was recovered from injuries by Alexei Kuleshov and Nikolai Pavlov , who was chosen captain of the “Province” before the start of the season. In the absence of Pavlov, the leaders of Nizhny Novgorod in the attack were Philip Voronkov, who switched from Fakel and played the whole season with virtually no replacements, Sergey Savin .

In November, fans of the “Gubernia” sent an open letter to the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region Valery Shantsev , in which they talked about the dire financial situation in the club [12] . Due to this situation, the “Province” in early 2015 broke up with Martino and the liaison Sergey Andrievsky, whose place was taken after a while by Dmitry Kovalev , who missed more than half of the season due to a lawsuit with Prikamye . The sports director Pavel Borsch also left the team.

Having, in the words of Plamen Konstantinov , “two million problems” [13] , “Gubernia” nevertheless held up with dignity, taking sixth place in the regular championship of Russia , but it did not have enough safety margin. At the 1/8 final stage, the team dropped out of the Challenge Cup , and in the series of the playoffs of the national championship they lost to Dynamo Moscow in the quarter finals and Fakel in the consolation semifinal.

2015–2016: collapse

In April 2015, Dmitry Fomin , honored master of sports, took the post of director of the Gubernia, and in May Plamen Konstantinov was replaced on the coaching bridge by Alexander Klimkin , an ex-mentor of the Novokuybyshevskaya NOVA , who was also a member of the coaching staff of the Russian team. The team was renamed Nizhny Novgorod and entered the 2015/16 season with a completely new line-up, which was formed in the context of spending the majority of the club budget on paying off debts to former players and the ban on international transfers imposed by the European Volleyball Confederation. Instead of the Latvian connecting agent Denis Petrov, which was played in the offseason, the main player in this role in Nizhny Novgorod was Artyom Khabibullin, who renewed his career. In other positions, quite experienced volleyball players also mainly played - forwards Andrey Titich, Sergey Timofeev and Andrey Kolesnik, blocking Alexander Kritsky and Victor Nikonenko, as well as libero Andrey Dranishnikov, who played for the Nizhny Novgorod team since 2009, but spent the previous season in Ufa “ Ural " .

“We are all good musicians, but the“ orchestra ”did not work out very well. On the other hand, it’s almost impossible to make a Super League team from scratch, all the more so without having any sensible budget, ”said the captain of Nizhny Novgorod Nikonenko after the season [14] . In the Russian championship, the team won only 2 of the 26 matches held, took last place and lost a place in the Super League.

Disbandment

Due to the club’s debts to former players and employees, the All-Russian Volleyball Federation banned Nizhny Novgorod from registering new players and did not allow citizens to participate in the major league championship A. Super League teams joined a number of Nizhny Novgorod volleyball players: Andrey Kolesnik and Alexander Kritsky moved to Ural , Andrey Titich and Maxim Novgorodov went to Ugra-Samotlor , Sergey Timofeev joined Neftyanik ; in the major league “A”, Viktor Nikonenko ( Yaroslavich ) and Samir Mukharov ( Grozny ) continued their performances.

Meanwhile, a new team was created in Nizhny Novgorod - ASK , which was headed by Igor Shulepov . In October 2016, she made her debut in the Premier League “B” [15] [16] .
